The country’s population is 10.88 million. More than 700,000 people are from Haitian descent. Making the population very diverse. 73% of the people are racially mixed of Spanish, indigenous, and African descent. 16% are considered to be White and 11% are Black. Due to the influx of Haitian immigrants and immigration laws, 210, 000 people are stateless.
The racial and cultural tensions between Haitians and Dominicans are deeply rooted in colonialism and slavery. Racist ideologies are expressed in their current relationship and have caused both to deny part of their identity.
