DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The country’s population is 10.5 million. More than 700,000 people are from Haitian descent. Making the population very diverse. 73% of the people are racially mixed of Spanish, indigenous, and African descent. 16% are considered to be White and 11% are Black. Due to the influx of Haitian immigrants and immigration laws, 210, 000 people are stateless.

The racial and cultural tensions between Haitians and Dominicans are deeply rooted in colonialism and slavery. Racist ideologies are expressed in their current relationship and have caused both to deny part of their identity.

KILOMETRO 26: SANTO DOMINGO NORTE

Kilometro 26 is about half an hour north of Santo Domingo and it is alongside a highway; exposing children and youth to local bars and night clubs. Since there is not much to do, it is easy for them to get caught in a vicious cycle. Due to the diversity in families, we are integrating the UrbanPromise model with activities that engages the young people and which foster a loving community.
